Hearing about Anne Travell and her siblings is at once familiar and strange. Anyone who has brothers and sisters will recognize some of the tensions between rivalry and friendship Georgian siblings negotiated. And anyone familiar with Jane Austen will recognize the connections between gender, property, and marriage. Other aspects of Anne’s sibling relations may surprise some. Though never married and female, Anne wielded great power within her family. Challenging previous historical interpretations of family relationships and family power that focus on spouse and parent relations, this lecture discusses the siblings’ unique relationships and their impact on other family relations and household arrangements.
